Finally, I've posted photos from the 2011 Olive Dell Ranch Bare Burro 5k held last April. (See http://imageevent.com/kenandjane/bb5k2011 .) I tried to eliminate any that show people who don't want their photo posted. If I posted yours by mistake, please let me know and I'll remove it.
The Bare Burro was tons of fun as participants will surely agree - it's great to run free. Hopefully we'll meet more of you next year.

2011 Bare Burro a Success!
Three years ago as I freehiked those quite dirt roads imagining people running and walking naked through the hills above Olive Dell Ranch, and thought up the name “Bare Burro 5k”, how could I have known what a wonderful event it would become? How could anyone have known?
The April 17th, 2011, 2nd Annual Bare Burro 5k at Olive Dell Ranch was a great success. Over 100 nude participants enjoyed the course and the awards ceremony afterwards. Then, many stayed to relax in the sun and eat with spectators and new friends on the deck and around the pool. This year the winning time was a blazing 19:40. (Way to go Patrick who asked before the race if he could run it barefoot!)
New people ran, including many who had never attended a naturist event before. The local running club attended this year, along with many other new faces. Cottontails abounded. What a great way to introduce new people to nude recreation!
The event was not only fun, it was a financial success; expenses were paid and the club made a profit. It started Olive Dell’s season off with a bang!
Thanks to all of the Olive Dell residents, Don of www.ThingstoDoNude.com , and other non-residents who volunteered their time. (I’d like to personally recognize my wonder wife, Jane, for all of her help during the race. For those who don’t know her, she’s the one who painted numbers on everyone’s legs.) The event wouldn’t have been nearly as successful without so much help.
We all look forward to next year. Be sure to attend the 3rd Annual Bare Burro 5k in 2012. It’s such fun to run bare in the sun!

Surviving the Bare Burro 5K
HOW I SURVIVED OLIVE DELL’S ANNUAL BARE BURRO 5K RUN

Cynthia and I arrived at the Olive Dell Nudist Ranch around 9 am on an absolutely beautiful, crystal clear Sunday morning to take part in their 2nd annual 5K Bare Burro Run. The temperature at that point was in the low 80's and just perfect for running, or walking the course. I am still a little too out of shape to attempt running the 3.1 mile trail that winds through the green hills behind Olive Dell, but I figured I could easily walk it.
We got our gear from the car and made our way up to the shady grass area near the pool where we met some friends and SCNA members George and Leslie from San Diego. They were both planning to run for the second year in a row, but Cynthia decided she’d rather be an observer this time, watch our stuff, and take pictures of us at the start and end of the race. When we registered, we were each given a commemorative t-shirt, and they painted our entry number on our right leg (I was #16). As the hour progressed we saw more and more people arriving, including SCNA members David, Gordon, and Akila and her daughter Amy. We also said hello to Anita and Joe Panganiban from AANR-West.
A little before the 10:30 start time all 101 runners and walkers gathered at the start line in the upper parking lot. The organizers explained the course layout.
As we stood at the starting line, Leslie pointed out to me the footwear of another runner standing near us. "Yeah, they're called "Mexican sandals," he said. I mentioned that they looked more like Roman sandals, consisting of leather soles approximately 1/4" thick with leather laces over his feet, ending just above his ankles.
Just before the countdown started, Leslie said, "Don't worry about holding back to walk with me. If you want to go ahead, go for it." In reality, it was the other way around, for as soon as the count went to zero and we all started off, everyone (save about 4 others) passed me by very quickly.
The course left the clubhouse parking lot and wound around past the "birdhouses" and then through the residential area and into the hills above. It seemed like the next mile and a half were almost all uphill. Whew! Just as I passed the half mile marker going up and had been walking approximately 15 minutes, the guy wearing the "Mexican sandals" ran past me downhill on his way back to finish line.
And speaking of nature, about 3/4 of a mile up the course as I rounded a bend in the trail, I came upon a native crossing the road, a four-foot long rattlesnake! I kept my distance and let him go on his merry way, but warned the next few runners on their way back down to watch out for him.
The course took us to a peak that overlooked the entire area and afforded a glorious view of all of Reche Canyon and Colton beyond to the north.
Olive Dell had painted red "uphill" arrows and blue "downhill" arrows on the ground for us directionally challenged first-timers and they also had volunteers along the way providing water, as well as encouragement, throughout the course.
Hey I wasn’t in any rush; just completing the course was going to be a victory for me. I kept plugging along, sure but steady, stopping a few times along the way to snap some photos or let my pounding heart settle down a little. I finally made it to the peak around 45-50 min. after starting. I stopped to take some more pictures of the gorgeous landscape and vistas visible from that point. It also helped to have a nice cool bottle of water waiting for me up there.
The good news is the second half of the course was almost all downhill. After a few minutes, I started back down, only stopping a couple of times to let a couple on horseback pass on the path. I finally reached the finish line and clubhouse patio a little after noon. The awards ceremony had already started. Besides medals for the overall winners, Olive Dell gave medals away to males and females with the best times in different age groups. For example, Leslie won the First Place medal for women in the 40-49 age range! Anita Panganiban also was awarded a medal (see photo). And what happened to the "Mexican sandal" guy? He was the overall winner completing the entire course in only 19 minutes! Next year we suggest they put rocks in those shoes as a handicap!
We spent the rest of the day visiting with friends, making some new ones, and relaxing in the sun, pool, and Jacuzzi.
The owners, Becky and Bobby Kilborn, as well as their staff, and all the Olive Dell volunteers need to be congratulated for organizing and overseeing a great race and opening up their hospitable and friendly resort for a wonderful naturist event.

Bare Burro 5K - Beginner's Experience
All had a great time at the Olive Dell Ranch's Bare Burro 5K this past weekend. I'll post a summary report soon, but for now, thanks to Robin W. for this nice summary.

A Beginner’s Nude 5k Experience

It started when one of my tri-athlete friends sent me a link to a Nike Nude Running video on You Tube. They were touting the new very lightweight running shoe by having all the runners in the video naked. It seemed to me that naked running was an actual event, so I Googled and found it was.
I discovered that the Olive Dell Ranch (about 1 hour away) was just getting ready to host its 2nd annual nude 5k trail run (Bare Burro 5K). I was intrigued. I went to the results from last year and saw that if I could run in under 31 minutes, I would get a medal! I have done numerous running and triathlon races, never coming in shouting distance of a podium finish and here was my opportunity for fame! I could do 31 minutes.
I sent off my registration and continued my training. None of my friends were willing to join me at this event, not even as spectators, so I headed off alone.
In the parking lot, I quickly stripped off my clothes, feeling absolutely no queasiness. The last time I had been naked in public was many, many years ago in Boy Scouts and at the YMCA (boy, times sure have changed). I was expecting to feel slightly foolish or at least something, but felt very relaxed and at ease.
Finding the sign up table I quickly got my number painted on my leg. Number 59! They also gave me a green wrist band indicating that I had no concerns about being photographed. In fact, I wanted to be photographed. I make a montage of all my races and events, and figured with careful cropping, there needed to be no exception made. I found one of the race officials and he pointed me to Becky, one of the owners. She was not running the race and agreed to take my picture. I gave her my camera and told her I would shout when I came close to the finish line. (See photos at http://imageevent.com/kenandjane/bareburro5k2011)
I had about an hour to kill so looked over the first 1/8 mile of the race. It was pointed out to me that we would run up to the water tower (not that big of a hill), around and then, way, way up to that distant hill where people were waving (far, far away and way, way uphill).
I was very sad to learn that the local running club was invited. I queried and discovered that I had absolutely zero chance of a podium finish (oh, well).
Soon we were off and running. Dusty and Hot. Uphill about 500 feet in the first 1.8 miles. Fortunately there was water every half mile (THANK YOU volunteers). Didn’t see any burro’s but saw a rattlesnake and a bunny (not together).
As I came near the finish line I hollered for Becky. She got excellent pictures of my strong finish. I took a quick shower and a dip in the freezing cold pool. Hung around to cheer on the podium finishers and thank all the volunteers.
As a first time nudist experience I would have to ask, why didn’t I do this sooner? What I discovered was that instead of feeling weird or funny, I felt very relaxed. Something about stripping down bare, also allowed me to strip off my worldly cares and concerns. I was so surprised that this turned into such a relaxing experience for me. I got laid off (work force reduced) two years ago and have been stuck in a depression. I have decided that I am no longer unemployed, merely retired. I am hoping that this bright spot yesterday will start me on the path of getting out of the two-year funk.
It’s highly recommended. I’ll be back next year, but alas, still without any possibility of a podium finish.

Bare Burro Trail Photos
Joe, a friend from Utah, has been staying with us at Olive Dell Ranch. We walked the Bare Burro 5k course Thursday afternoon. I took a few photos. (See http://imageevent.com/kenandjane/bareburrotrail2011 ).
Report: Everything is very green from all the recent rain. In a few places the greenery has nearly turned the road into a trail. Still, the course looks much better than last year. Only one short area is somewhat rutted. It is certainly ready for us naked runners.
Also, the upcoming weather looks great. There will be sunny skies, with temperatures in the low eighties for the weekend of the 15th through 17th. The race will take place on Sunday the 17th. Registration will begin about 9:00 A.M., and the race will start at 10:30. The awards will be presented about 12:00.
Food will be available at the restaurant after the race.
You can still register the day of the race. See you at the Bare Burro.

Bare Burro 5k Nearly Here
The Second running of the Bare Burro 5k will be April 17th at Olive Dell Ranch in Colton, CA (http://www.olivedellranch.com/).
The $25 cost includes entrance fee and t-shirt.
Although there is serious competition, the emphasis is on participation and having fun in a naturist environment, so many will walk the course that follows remote dirt roads and trails through the hilly terrain of California's badlands, with the start and finish within the family nudist park. This is a nude event, although women may wear a sport bra. Runners will likely see wild burros in the hills along the way.
Sunday race check-in starts at 9 A.M., and the race will start at 10:30 A.M., with the awards ceremony about noon. The race is timed and awards are presented to the top three in all age categories - from 5 and under, to 70+. The top 3 overall runner receive plaques, and the top 3 males and females in each age group will receive medals. All finishers will receive a memento of their achievement.
After the run enjoy food and music; swim; relax in the hot tub or sauna; play volleyball, tennis, or shuffle board; tour the amazing Dellymaze Park; hike the Olive Dell Nature Trail (California's best), or just work on your all over body tan.
On race day, the resort is open to members and runners only. Nonparticipating spectators will not be permitted in unless accompanied by a member and participants. The guest fee is $15 per adult over 18 for one-day membership. All team members must be individually registered for the run. There is no additional charge for entering as a team.
A fun dance will be held at 8 P.M. the Saturday before the race - the annual Trailer Trash Dance - followed by a relaxing soak in the hot tub. The restaurant will be open all day Saturday and Sunday. For those who can stay a little longer, nude Karaoke singing will be held Sunday evening starting about 6 P.M.

The $25 cost includes entrance fee and t-shirt.
Although there is serious competition, the emphasis is on participation and having fun in a naturist environment, so many will walk the course that follows remote dirt roads and trails through the hilly terrain of California's badlands, with the start and finish within the family nudist park. This is a nude event, although women may wear a sport bra. Runners will likely see wild burros in the hills along the way.
Sunday race check-in starts at 9 A.M., and the race will start at 10:30 A.M., with the awards ceremony about noon. The race is timed and awards are presented to the top three in all age categories - from 5 and under, to 70+. The top 3 overall runner receive plaques, and the top 3 males and females in each age group will receive medals. All finishers will receive a memento of their achievement.
After the run enjoy food and music; swim; relax in the hot tub or sauna; play volleyball, tennis, or shuffle board; tour the amazing Dellymaze Park; hike the Olive Dell Nature Trail (California's best), or just work on your all over body tan.
On race day, the resort is open to members and runners only. Nonparticipating spectators will not be permitted in unless accompanied by a member and participants. The guest fee is $15 per adult over 18 for one-day membership. All team members must be individually registered for the run. There is no additional charge for entering as a team.
A fun dance will be held at 8 P.M. the Saturday before the race - the annual Trailer Trash Dance - followed by a relaxing soak in the hot tub. The restaurant will be open all day Saturday and Sunday. For those who can stay a little longer, nude Karaoke singing will be held Sunday evening starting about 6 P.M.

Bare Burro Photos

Are you Running Nude This Year?

These photos include several of the picnic table that is located at the highest point on the course, about half way, where we will have a water station for runners. You can see more photos of last year’s race at www.olivedellranch.com.
Be sure to bring a friend along with you this year. Runners and walkers will be nude, but friends can remain clothed to observe the race, and there are many things to do at Olive Dell, including visits to Dellymaze Park, and walking the Olive Dell Nature Trail.
And you may want to stay over the weekend – tent camping and the birdhouses are great! (Call Olive Dell at (909) 825-6619, and ask for Bobby). The restaurant will be open all day Saturday and Sunday, so plan on enjoying a good meal.
The Saturday before the race we’re planning to sing karaoke, and even perhaps have a Saturday dance like last year, and an evening soak in the spa is always relaxing, so try to stay for the entire weekend.

Freehiking Barefoot
“Hiking nude is freeing . . . natural . . . wonderful. Hiking nude without even your shoes is . . . sublime. I get few opportunities to do it barefoot in the Cascades . . . footwear almost always being a necessity to protect the feet. Hiking back to my car with my shoes slung over my shoulders, the feel of years of overburden giving just so under the soles of my feet can only be described as sensuous. Purists call it 'free-hiking' and it is definitely that. Having to put my shoes back on was almost as if I was putting clothes back on. Was I still nude?” – Rick
This spring, one participant ran the entire Bare Burro 5k at Olive Dell Ranch without shoes (or clothes of course). I've only freehiked barefoot once, in sand - it was nice, but quickly got too hot. Anyone else enjoy barefoot freehiking or running?

More about the Fun at The Bare Burro 5K
This last weekend Joe (who ran the Bare Burro 5K), came all the way back from Utah to share Olive Dell Ranch with his wife Cindy. She’s fairly new to naturism, but enjoyed hanging out at the resort with us and other members, discovering the characters in Dellymaze Park, walking the Olive Dell Nature Trail and the Bare Burro course to the picnic table, and hanging out by the pool in the sun. She mentioned that she hopes she can attend the Burro next year.
Olive Dell is a family-friendly place to introduce people to social naturism. I understand the resort gained at least three new members as a result of the Burro; membership is such a wonderful value! We hope many new people take advantage of Olive Dell and the surrounding natural environment. Were else is Southern California can you be just minutes from major shopping, yet be free to hike nude for miles directly from your cabin or trailer? Only at Olive Dell Ranch.
So come for a visit. Jane and I would love to relax with you on our deck, and take you on a tour of Dellymaze Park and the Olive Dell Nature Trail. And bring a friend along; sometimes having a friend is all it takes for someone to overcome reluctance about naturism.

The Bare Burro 5K Run was a lot of fun. I had a blast. Olive Dell's organization was great and it far exceeded my expectations. It was real nice to see the event attended by people of all ages. The course was demanding but fun and the turnout was amazing. It was a shame I had other commitments and could not stay for the rest of the day. I am looking forward to next year’s event! Hopefully, naturists and nudists could use this annual event to reach out to the younger generations and for textiles to give it a try. I know many of them participate in mud runs or "undie" runs so why not encourage them to take it a step further. Bare Burro 5K Update
The weather will be great! That’s the forecast for the Bare Burro 5K. By race time (10:30 am) Sunday, April 18th the temperature should be about 70 degrees and getting warmer – perfect for the 60 plus participants in California’s first nude 5K. Check-in starts at 9:00 am, and we will gather for the race by 10:15 am.

Great news! We've talked with the t-shirt maker, and he says we can wait for another week before producing the shirts, so we've extended the Bare Burro 5K registration deadline until April 9th. (People may still register up to race day, but will not get a t-shirt.)
On Saturday the 17th, the day before the race, plan for some fun activities, including a pre-race freehike of the course. Take a guided tour of the totally unique Dellymaze Park and the newly opened Olive Dell Nature Trail. Take a nude tennis lesson from Dave. And you just might get involved in tennis, volleyball, shuffleboard, and horseshoe competitions.
Nude karaoke will start at 6:00 pm, and Olive Dell's annual Trailer Trash dance will start at 8:00 pm Saturday night – followed by a group soak in the hot tub. Hopefully the pool will be warm enough for a swim, and the deck will certainly be warm enough for some relaxation / sunbathing.

Things to Know about the Bare Burro 5K
Hurry - only two days left to register for the Bare Burro 5K. Don’t miss California’s first nude run! (And even if you can’t run, you can join PJ and me for a fun walk in the sun and claim an awesome commemorative Bare Burro t-shirt for participating!)

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE BARE BURRO 5K
The Bare Burro 5K will be held Sunday, April 18th, at Olive Dell Ranch, 26520 Keissel Road, Reche Canyon, Colton CA. Link to map here: http://www.olivedellranch.com/directions.htm
Race-day check-in starts at 9:00 am, and we will gather for the race by 10:15 am.
If you’re coming Saturday the 17th, plan for some fun activities, including a pre-race freehike of the course, of course. In addition, we are planning guided tours of the totally unique Dellymaze Park and the newly opened Olive Dell Nature Trail. Dave is offering nude tennis lessons. If we have enough people we will hold volleyball, shuffleboard, and horseshoe competitions.
There is nude karaoke at 6:00 pm and a fun dance at 8:00 pm Saturday night – the annual Trailer Trash Dance - followed by a group soak in the hot tub. Hopefully the pool will be warm enough, and it will certainly be warm enough for some relaxation / sunbathing.
The restaurant will be open all day, and will serve a special dinner (you must order the dinner by lunch time). It should be a fun weekend for you and any friends you bring along. There are still very nice cabins available for $30 a night (call Olive Dell at (909) 825-6619, and ask for Bobby).

Olive Dell is clothing optional (you may chose to wear clothes or not), but the race is nude, except you should plan to wear socks and running/walking shoes, unless you’re a barefoot runner.
You must be nude to enjoy the hot tub, pool, and surrounding areas. Please shower before entering; shower facilities are available at the resort.
Bring two towels with you; it is nudist etiquette to sit on your own towel\.
Bring your sunscreen, especially if you are a newbie nude.
Cameras and cell-phone cameras are not allowed during the race. A photographer will be available after the race to take your photo if you want.
Firearms and illegal substances are not allowed at Olive Dell ranch.

Bare Burro 5k Update
Don’t miss out! Registrations are coming in for the Bare Burro 5k - the first nude run held in Southern California. (There will also be nude walkers – PJ and me for instance; we won’t win a medal, but we’ll get lots of sun, have lots of fun, and take home a cool Bare Burro t-shirt for participating!)
